The civi Messerschmitt (Me 108 Taifun)

Post by Mathias Pommerien »

Some very early appetizers.
Exterior model is about 75% done.
Obviously needs some engine detailing, cockpit modelling and all those hang-tags like nav lights and antennas.

Great project Mathias,

talking about classics... Didn't Heinz Ruhmann own a 108 as a aviation addict?

this one is really going to be added to my collection...

keep up the good work!

Do you have or can find any docs about? Could be a very interesting thing.

Hmm, interesting.
His first aircraft was a Klemm, and in "Quax, der Bruchpilot" he flew an Udet Flamingo.
Can't find reference for the 108 so far but I'll keep looking.

I know he had his initial training luftwaffe or wehrmacht, I don't know anymore, at Quedlinburg. Then he made a promotional tour in - I still think a 108 - through Germany. After the war he was blamed for it, to be pro nazi-regime. He always denied and explained he just was hired as a actor to promote flying... I will try to look deeper in this matter. I know there is a tv-documentary on this subject, although its dated a few years back allready...

I did find out he was (obviously tricked) in a promotional film (wochenschau) by the propagandaministerium as a luftwaffe-feldwebel flying - to my knowledge - a 108. It was said - in the wochenschau - he was a kurierflieger, flying around Germany. All this I have from his biography. In the documentary, there is a short scene where he climbes ito the cockpit dressed as luftwaffe-feldwebel.

Hello Mathias,

I like very much the new Me-108 project. It is a great idea to bbuid this model. The Me 108 have a special place in modern aviation history.

Have a good day

Hi Mathias,

She looks really sweet. Looking already forward to see more about the 108.

I know very well what work in progress means, so I shouldn't ask. But I'm just too curious.. I would
almost guess that it is the D-EBEI when looking on the spinner, antennas and anti-collision lights. Will there also be versions with the fixed pitch & Argus-propeller?

Regards,
Kai

Hello Kai,

spot on regarding D-EBEI.
Let's put it this way: Since there are no two even loosely similar Bf 108 these days we use D-EBEI as the base.
The landing light for instance is not present on the real D-EBEI so the exterior model is a mix of various features if you will.
I don't think that we'll do a fixed pitch prop version since that would require an entirely different set of airfiles.
There'll be a modern and a vintage style cockpit though.
The planes we are looking at as reference are the three "prominent" planes located here in Germany, that is the privately owned D-EBFW,
D-ESBH of the Messerschmitt Stiftung and of course Lufthansa Stiftung's D-EBEI "Elly Beinhorn".

Hmm, I shouldn't show that since some will probably moan about the incompleteness.
Anyway, here's two shots from it's FSX maiden flight, absolutely nude yet.
The exterior is now in the paintshop btw. I'm sure Alessandro will show off something in a few weeks.
