NJG Squadron Markings

Post by Helldiver »

Some interesting excepts from a letter I received from Rudi Thun dated June, 1979. Rudi served as Squadron Commander of NJG 9, flying Me-110.

“ Your questions regarding the Night Fighter markings embarrasses me. If I remember correctly, the last letter stood for the squadron number as follows:
A – Wing Staffel
B - Group Staffel I group
C – 1 Squadron
D – 2 Squadron
E – 3 Squadron
F - Group Staffel II group
G - 4 Squadron
H – 5 Squadron
I – 6 Squadron
J – Group Staffel III group
And so forth…
As Squadron Commander of NJG 9 squadron, I flew C9+AM (That was after the transfer of our group from NJG5 to NJG 6) K should thus be the a 7th squadron plane.
However, I checked Wim Johnson’s book who was the squadron commander of the 7th, and he flew C9+ES. I am thus as confused as you are, Bob.
Painting schemes on the other hand, changed pretty freely. And a dark top and a light belly was not uncommon. In fact there probably was no great adherence to either numbering schemes or paint patterns. Thius is so long ago…”

So for what it’s worth, it’s what Rudi reported to me. I thought I would forward it before I’m gone.
